"Why are so many people acting as though Wilson bought out a full-page ad in the Times to shout obscenities at some unknown filmmaker? Like, I know Nolan has shooters because I’m occasionally one of them, but a translator of Homer’s works laying out her reasons why she didn’t enjoy his adaptation of The Odyssey does not seem like a good enough motive to bring out our pitchforks. So she was, at times, a bit snarky. And??? Have you never cared so much—known so much—felt so much—about a subject only to see it misunderstood on a very large scale? I’d have written 4,234 words about that Netflix adaptation of Persuasion, and I’d have been much meaner than Emily Wilson."

Some of the best activists we know have headed to the front lines in Minneapolis. Some have fled the country. Some are here in LA using all their energy and time to fight this fascist regime. We all need your help.

I’m Catie Laffoon and I’ve been on the ground in LA doing everything I can to protect my community and bring awareness to the entire country every single day since ICE invaded on June 8th. The truth of what is happening in our country is not being reported honestly by any major news outlet. I’ve watched it with my own eyes here in LA. We see it right now in Minneapolis. I’ve worked in the film industry for 20+ years and I’ve seen how the media has framed this moment. They have left out crucial information and do not provide all the facts and context for the images they show us. They report without question the lies the Trump administration spews when we can all see the truth with our own eyes. The only way we stand a chance to save ourselves and this country is for us to know the truth of what is happening on the ground in various cites. Government officials are giving great speeches on tv but behind the scenes they are selling us out. The people on the front lines are now the press. We are the most honest way of getting real information out when it’s vital people know the truth.

What’s remarkable about the U.S. position in all this is its assumed passivity, as if somehow the most powerful country in the world were composed of people with no power. The dance of politics, the obsession with optics, the influence of lobbies, petty careerism, ambition — all of this has eroded something more fundamental: the government’s grasp of the seriousness of life. It has also destroyed any last semblance of accountability. “Elite impunity is the sole remaining area of bipartisan consensus,” said Matt Duss, Bernie Sanders’s former foreign-policy chief and the executive vice-president of the Center for International Policy. “They understand that whatever they do, it’s not going to really hurt them because, you know, Donald Rumsfeld died in his bed.”

Kathryn VanArendonk: l that attention to detail, I find, has shaped so much of how I remember the show, and how I think about it tonally. There’s this tendency to combine absolutely devastating moments with some little bit of Star Wars–y fabric that shifts the perspective or makes it just a touch absurd. The one that stuck with me for some reason is the shot of Lonni Jung’s corpse on the bench, and then this adorable, ridiculous alien corgi thing wanders by and sniffs at him.

Tony Gilroy: You would be so happy to know how many meetings there were on that stupid dog. I think I approved three different dogs. Like, “Yeah, that dog is fine for me.” “Okay, that dog is also fine for me.” Then people kept raising their hand: “I think it looks like a raccoon.” “I don’t like this dog.” And then Johnny [Gilroy’s brother John, an art designer] would call up and go, “Dude, I think you could push these guys further, because they’re not happy with the dog.” And then what the dog sounds like — I think I approved like three different sounds for the dog. And then they want to name the dog. For the credits! Oh my God, I gotta tell my brother you asked about the dog. He’s gonna laugh.

Tony Gilroy: I have to go back and look. [Shaking head in exasperation.] I don’t know. I don’t know what the dog’s name is.
