Reform-led Norfolk County Council banning Pride displays and events across the county’s libraries. What we see here is a glimpse at the kind of intolerant and repressive country they would build if ever they formed a government. This then is but a starter. The main course would be even darker.

I've signed @neilduncanjordan.bsky.social amendment to the Representation of the People Bill. Companies shouldn't be able to use political donations to gain influence and secure lucrative taxpayer-funded contracts. The amendment would be a step towards a cleaner and more accountable democracy.

When we started our campaign to bring water back into public ownership, we knew it would be a long, hard fight. Now it’s bearing fruit. This objection hasn’t been made in a vacuum. It’s a response to the fact that we’ve won the argument: water should be in public hands.

I’ve backed a motion calling for prison education to be brought back in-house. Too many institutions are failing to deliver the standards of education people deserve. We need a system that supports educators to do their jobs properly and gives prisoners a real chance to turn their lives around.

The many takes flying around about John Healey and national security spending miss a fundamental point. In Finland, where people have a strong social safety net and a real sense of shared national purpose, around 80% say they would be prepared to defend their country. In the UK, it's closer to 30%.

Governments are being forced to spend more and more money tackling the day-to-day failings of this failed economic model. The solution? More investment and public control over those basics of life - water, housing, energy. I spoke about this on Peston last night.
