Here is a short breakdown of how I did it, and what it cost! I am still tweaking my waterfall options, but the plastic one is a flower pot I found in my yard and variously patched and drilled…
Clay-coloured Sparrows are hatching & boy are they tiny! These birds have a rapid tepro cycle: incubation 10-14 days, fledging in 7-10 days - before the young can fly! They belly out of the nest & scoot around on the ground bc ground nesting is so dangerous! 🇨🇦🪶🪺🐣🧪 @usaskartsci.bsky.social
Field update: completed 1️⃣6️⃣ experimental trials, caught 4️⃣ female brown-headed cowbirds (our odour donors), found 2️⃣3️⃣ yellow warbler and 7️⃣ clay-coloured sparrow nests 🪺🏆 🪶🇨🇦🧪 #FieldWork #biology #ornithology #research @usask.ca @usaskartsci.bsky.social

What a difference a day can make! We are up to 10 males recorded, 3 clay-coloured and 15 yellow nests!! 🪺🏆
30 days of fieldwork: banded >30 clay-coloured sparrows, recorded 8 males 🎶, found 1️⃣ 🪺; found 9️⃣ yellow warbler 🪺, completed 4 experimental trials! Many more nests to find, trials to run, and birds to band! #biology #ornithology #research #FieldWork @usask.ca @usaskartsci.bsky.social

A surprise western tiger #salamander hitched a ride in the aged compost I had delivered for my #garden. Hope the lil guy can find a suitable habitat in the neighbourhood, as it wandered out of the garden when I was shovelling endless loads of soil. 🦎 #Saskatchewan #wildlife

The inaugural Grieves Lab field season got off to a cold & windy start! We will be back out around #Saskatoon tomorrow in search of our study species for #research on how birds use smell to find and attract mates and avoid parasitism 🧪🪶🇨🇦 @usaskartsci.bsky.social @usask.ca
Bird banding tells us a lot about bird populations & is an important tool in biology research. Banders require extensive training & permits before being granted the privilege of working with these amazing taxa! White-throated Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco, Chipping Sparrow, Purple Finch 🪶🇨🇦 @usask.ca

Ha! I had a wee binge last night and am now finished S5E2. There are some real heavy hitters in there, and I managed to forget some very wild stuff since my last watch! Tears were shed! Cats were cuddled!
