My current, depressing #AltFran wip

The second time Phillip and Fran are alone happens a few weeks later, when the group goes to the corn maze. Fran couldn't keep up with the trio she entered the maze with and quickly got lost on her own.

She feels dejected as she waits in place for 10 minutes to see if anyone comes back for her.

When it becomes clear that no one's coming to find her, however, any remaining optimism she had about this friend group leaves her body as she deflates like a balloon. Fran wills herself not to cry as she slowly trudges back the way she came. Reminds herself that this isn't new. That she should have expected this. And that, maybe, she just wasn't built to have friends.

The couple follow the footprints to the sound of children's laughter and a woman's cheer emanating from the playroom. Phillip laughs in disbelief and Fran's mouth twitches with humor as they take in the scene before them. Their children are play-wrestling in human and joey forms, their bodies covered in glitter and swaths of acrylic paint as Fran's cousin, Rey, watches and cheers them on while munching on a cookie entirely covered in glitter.

Fran looked on longingly from the wall at the people engaged in animated conversations with each other in the spacious living room.
She was invited by her new friend Penny, who only talked with her briefly before flitting off to her boyfriend. Technically this is now also Fran's friend group after Penny brought her into the fold, but she's still waiting to feel like one of them after hanging out together several times now. Her attempts at making conversation with others usually fall flat more often than not, so at this point she tags along with the friend group as a way to explore the area with locals, if anything.
