For the month of July, Upon A White Horse: Journeys in Ancient Britain and Ireland is available for Kindle at just 99p.
Rather tickled to see Steeple Chasing in the “Mustn’t Grumble” section of Waterstones in Canterbury, especially next to the brilliant All The Devils Are Here.
@drfrancisyoung.bsky.social Thought you’d enjoy seeing this on sale in a great bookshop in Tallinn.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the publication of the works of Agnes Owens. The first of the reissues, including Gentlemen Of The West, are out today - with introductions by Scottish writers and terrific use of Joan Eardley paintings. A beautiful set of books.
Upon A White Horse: Journeys in Ancient Britain and Ireland is out in paperback now.
The paperback of Upon A White Horse will be published on April 23. If any journalist interested in writing about the book would like an advance copy, please do let me know.
Checked to see whether the gravestone-eating tree is still eating its gravestone.
I'm pleased to say that @waterstones.bsky.social are offering 25% off the paperback of Upon A White Horse for those pre-ordering this week. The promo code is FEB26 & details are at this link. If you're thinking of buying my book, this is a great deal. #WPreorder www.waterstones.com/campaign/feb...
What a treat to see Bis in Glasgow tonight, supporting Maxïmo Park. They were a joy.
I love the TV series, of course, and wasn’t sure whether the tie-in book - a charity shop find for £3 - could measure up. But it’s packed with fabulously exciting thoughts and passages.
This has always been the maddest of the charity shops near me. Today they unveiled their masterpiece.
This is Virginia Astley's beautiful new record The Singing Places. It can be ordered from her Bandcamp page, I think. One of the many delighful things about this music is that the field recordings of birds, from chiffchaff to wren, are listed in the credits in the order that each species appears.
A record my son was given as a present. Previously owned by a Dundonian who knew the score.
The mighty @stereolabgroop.bsky.social in Glasgow. Melodie Is A Wound, the centrepiece of a wonderful show, has to be up there with their greatest songs.
It was a pleasure to see David Boulter perform his work, including pieces from recent @claypipemusic.bsky.social album "Whitby", at Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. A special place to experience live music. They host gigs every month. Photos by Robin Mitchell.
I’m reading @graemethomson.bsky.social’s excellent biography of Kate Bush, Under The Ivy, and am moved by this bit where she’s *still at school* and her dad plays the unreleased Man With The Child In His Eyes for a caller at the farm.
I'm thrilled that Upon A White Horse is going to be Radio 4's Book Of The Week. The first episode, which is on Stonehenge, will be on December 8 at 11.45am – and then there will be a reading from a different part of the book every day up to and including December 12. I hope you'll enjoy listening.
Glasgow is having one of those mornings when the sky and stone create works of art wherever you look.
“Ross is not just writing about a specific place or feature, but the people associated with it. It’s a gallimaufry of encounters.” I’m delighted that Upon A White Horse has been included in @scotsman.com’s Books of 2025.
Delighted that Upon A White Horse has made it into the Financial Times’s Books of 2025. The full list is in this weekend’s paper. Many thanks to Tom Robbins for choosing my book.
I had the great good fortune to meet Budge, the @norwichcathedral.bsky.social cat, during my visit today. A fine fellow, is he not?
The English leg of my book tour begins on Saturday with a sold-out event in Sheffield. Tickets remain for the other dates: Guildford, Dorchester, Bath, Norwich & Whitby. I'm also doing a special London event in the evening of October 20, as part of @stoneclub.bsky.social. Please do come, if you can.
Popped into Govan Old. The Pictish sarcophagus is looking great. I signed my books in their excellent gift shop. Perhaps pick up a Christmas present while helping @govanstones.bsky.social fundraising?
