Do we think Mamdani has read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists? This is a key step in the book’s proposals for a better future: government stores selling the necessities of life at affordable prices

“State-owned shops will supply state employees with the necessities of life at the lowest possible prices. At first the stace wil buy from private manufacturers, in huge quantities to get things cheap. There won't be any advertising. The sole aim will be to supply goods at low prices, so they will be cheaper than profit-making private stores.
The national shops will be just
for those in public service, as
they won't take metal money. At first, everyone will be paid in metal money, but public servants could opt to be paid all or part in tokens for the national shops, hotels restaurants, and so on.
The national shops will sell practically everything for low prices, so it wont be long before people will prefer tokens. Anyone unemployed and willing to work will be employed cultivating land or making food, boots, clothing, furniture, and all the necessities and comforts of life.”

When we adapted This Slavery into a graphic novel, we set the action in the town where the writer, Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, lived and worked. That meant several joyous trips to Great Harwood in Lancashire - including this one after the book was finished ☔️

Here’s some maths from This Slavery graphic novel, all about how the bosses get rich from the labour of the workers. Hope it helps!

I've worked every week since I was eleven, which is 500 weeks =2,400,000 yards.
And there's 100 houses just like ours in this street (so 960,000,000 yards).
I work six days a week for 10 hours=1,200 yards a week
But I work four looms, not
one = 4,800 yards a week
Hester's done the same, so that's 4,800,000 yards between us.
Mother's done double that at least, so 9,600,000 yards out of our little house.
And a hundred towns like ours (so 96,000,000,000 yards).
All generating profit for folk like Barstock across the British Empire, built upon profits and the suffering of the fallen.

Where are the schools?
They say that we should only look after our own, sort out what's ours and tidy our home.
Cultivate your garden, said the writer Voltaire, saying that's all we need do, to care.
But in another place many miles away, schools are being destroyed, they say.
Education, we're told, is a human right.
But there aren't any schools left in sight.
We're in education.
It's our affair, no?
So what do we do?
Pretend we don't know
that this destruction is going on?
That hundreds of schools have just gone?
Or do we ensure our voices are heard to forcibly condemn the disaster incurred?
