She only looked up if the sound of other people coming close made her suspicious or when one of the incredibly pesky flies bit her!

The image is a wildlife photograph of two green woodpeckers (colloquially known as yaffles) on a grassy lawn, capturing an interaction between an adult and a juvenile. The adult stands on the right, with olive-green plumage, a pale chest and a distinctive bright red crown. The absence of the red facial “moustache” identifies her as a female. She has a black mask around her pale eye and a long, dark beak with her remarkably long, sticky tongue extended. Several ant larvae cling to the outside of her beak.

Unlike other woodpeckers that feed on wood-boring grubs, green woodpeckers spend most of their time on the ground eating ants and their larvae. Their tongue can extend up to 10 cm—around a third of their body length—and is coated in sticky saliva to trap ants. Adults feed their young by regurgitating a semi-liquid paste of ants and larvae, with both parents sharing feeding duties for around 19 days in the nest. Once the chicks fledge at three to four weeks old, the brood is often divided, with each parent guiding their young to forage for ants until they become independent.

The juvenile, positioned on the left, faces the adult with an open beak, begging for more food. Its plumage is heavily speckled and barred over a greenish-grey base, and a small red patch is beginning to develop on its crown. The birds are angled towards each other, creating a strong triangular focal point in the centre of the frame, as the adult clears her beak after feeding the youngster.

The pair are on a dry patch of short grass, a mix of green and straw-coloured blades, in a well-maintained, irrigated area of Kew Gardens beneath the shade of mature trees. Elsewhere, much of the lawn is dry and barren, the ground baked hard after repeated heatwaves and 40 days without rain. These conditions must make life especially difficult for ground-feeding birds. Fortunately, yaffles are well equipped with their long, powerful beaks to penetrate the hardened soil and reach the ant nests below.

This is a wildlife photograph of a small bird of prey that is the central feature of the image, perched on a gnarled tree branch. The bird is a recently fledged Common Kestrel. It has a speckled brown and buff chest with dark vertical streaks, heavily barred brown wings, and a brown-streaked head. It’s perched upright, facing forward, with its gaze fixed directly toward the camera lens. It has a sharp, hooked beak, which is slightly open as it calls for the parent to bring food. It has a pale yellow cere and visible bright yellow talons gripping the branch. It’s perched on a thin, weathered, lichen-covered, dead hawthorn tree branch that extends diagonally across the frame. The background is a soft, completely out-of-focus mix of deep green and dark foliage, creating a smooth bokeh effect.

Kestrel description from the RSPB website: Both males and females have pale undersides with black speckles. Males have a slate-grey head and uppertail with a single black band at the tip. Females are browner all over, with bars all along the uppertail. Both males and females have dark ‘tear’ marks extending below each eye. Wing tips are more pointed than a Sparrowhawk’s. They have a longer tail than other falcons, with a black band at the end, fanned out while hovering. The beak is yellow and black. Legs are yellow. They are between 32 and 35cm in length.

The May and spring temperature record was broken last week at Kew Gardens, reaching 35.1°C during the afternoon. I left before it became too hot for me to bear! By 9am, when most people were starting their working day, the temperature had already climbed to 27°C.

The foxes had been active since before opening time, with the vixens bringing in food while conditions were still suitable for hunting. As the heat intensified, much of the wildlife that Connie and I enjoy watching disappeared into cooler dens, nests, undergrowth and shaded woodland.

My chosen image this week shows two fox cubs born to neighbouring dens occupied by sibling vixens. Once the cubs are a few months old, the vixens bring them together and raise them communally in a shared den. These cubs were born several weeks apart, explaining the noticeable difference in size.

In the heat, fresh food is especially important, providing a significant source of water as well as nutrition. Competition can therefore become quite intense.

The larger cub crouches low to the ground as it lunges towards the other. Its body is stretched forward, mouth open wide to reveal its teeth, while its ears are pinned back. The smaller cub rocks back on its haunches with its front legs raised defensively. Its mouth is also open, showing teeth and tongue, ears folded back in submission. The confrontation is brief, with both cubs vocalising as they challenge each other over food.

They both have the reddish-brown coat typical of the species. The larger cub has a rich orange-red coat with darker shading on the ears and lower legs. The smaller cub shows more grey on the chest and underside, along with more pronounced dark markings around the muzzle.

The scene is set within a lush green habitat, with tall grasses in the foreground and dense rhododendron foliage behind. A curved branch crossing the left side of the frame adds depth and helps frame the action.

A close-up photograph of a small butterfly resting on the delicate flowers of Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris). The butterfly is a female Orange-tip (Anthocharis cardamines). Females are identifiable by white wings that lack the bright orange patches seen on the male butterfly’s forewings. The visible underside of the hindwing shows a distinctive mottled green and white camouflage pattern. It has thin, knobbed antennae and a small black spot on the forewing. It’s resting on the blooming umbel of cow parsley, which is made up of tiny, clustered white flowers resembling an umbrella. Below the main cluster, several green flower buds are visible. Cow parsley is sometimes called Queen Anne’s Lace. I wanted to achieve a soft, dreamlike feel for this piece so I used a shallow depth of field and the shoot-through technique, with the lens close up to foreground cow parsley umbels to add a gentle haze. The background is a blurred blend of muted greens, purples and blues, from the bluebells and wild garlic that carpet the woodland floor.

The small copper is a small butterfly that is on the wing throughout the summer between April and October. Males are territorial and can be seen basking on bare ground or rock waiting for females, every now and again chasing off other insects that encroach on their space. Adults can be seen feeding on ragwort and thistles, while the caterpillars feed on common sorrel and sheep's sorrel. Found in dry, sunny habitats, including heathland, woodland edges, waste ground and downland.

This image is an atmospheric portrait of a young fox cub (or kit) peering over an earthen mound. The cubs have only been outside the den entrance for a little over a week. They’re between 5 and 6 weeks old now and still vulnerable, completely reliant on their mother. The composition uses a shallow depth of field, creating a dreamlike quality with blurred foreground elements created by shooting through the foreground flowers with a 400mm telephoto zoom lens. The cub has fuzzy, reddish-brown fur with greyish undertones. Its face is characterised by large, pointed ears, alert blue-green eyes, and a small dark nose on the short muzzle, typical of cubs at this age. Their eyes are still developing which is why they still have a slight touch of blue, accentuated by reflections of the bluebells. When watching them it’s been important to stay at a respectful distance, watching quietly, using a long telephoto lens and remaining as still as possible. The vixen is habituated to the presence of people and knows that we aren’t a potential threat. The instinct of the cubs would be to hide if they sensed our presence. We don’t want to cause them any distress. The cub, placed centrally in the composition, is looking forward with a curious but cautious expression. It’s just emerging from behind an earthen ridge, with its front paws slightly visible. The lower quarter of the frame consists of out-of-focus sandy brown earth. Large, soft-edged blurs of bluebells in the foreground frame the cub, adding a pop of colour and a sense of depth. Behind the cub is a dense thicket of green foliage and leaves. The lighting is diffused and gentle, with morning sunlight being filtered through new Spring foliage in the surrounding trees. The overall lighting has a slightly hazy, ethereal quality. I processed the image to suggest the look of a pastel or watercolour painting. It’s the delicate approach that I would have taken when I was still able to paint and draw my subjects.

They’re just starting to emerge on the oaks now and will create an extra layer of concealment for the breeding kestrel pair. As with any nest site, I captured this image using a telephoto lens at 400mm on a crop sensor (cropped further in post processing) so that I don’t disturb my subjects and remain quietly observing from a distance.

The main subject of the image is a female red fox, captured mid-stride, moving from left to right across the frame. Her body is long and low as she moves at pace across her territory. She has a rusty orange coat with lighter, almost white, fur on her underside and pointed muzzle. There’s a dark grey, almost black, patch that runs down her chest and along her abdomen. She has dark, almost black, sock markings on her legs and ear tips, while her long, bushy tail, or brush, has a distinctive white tip. The foreground is dominated by lush green grass, while the mid-ground and background are filled with dense clumps of bright yellow daffodils with long green leaves. The background is softly blurred (bokeh), which keeps the focus sharply on the fox. Just visible beneath her belly are swollen, pink mammaries that indicate that she is nursing young. She’s moving rapidly to find food and water quickly before returning to her concealed den and young cubs.

Star the vixen (female fox) is my subject again this week. I’ve chosen a 16 by 9 ratio, landscape aspect composition with her as the central focus, facing the camera as she trotted towards me through the woodland. Her fur is a rich reddish-brown on the back and head, with a lighter greyish edge to her face and a white muzzle. Her chest and belly are a sooty black colour with a distinctive white patch on her chest that gave rise to her name. Her ears are large, pointed, and have black tips, facing forward showing that she’s relaxed as she approaches me. Her eyes are a striking amber colour and show her to be looking intently at the me. She’s surrounded by a dense carpet of vegetation surrounding the tree that she is trotting beneath. The foreground and background are filled with tall green grass and numerous stalks of emerging bluebells. Most of the mature trees in this woodland are allowed to grow a carpet of dense wildflowers and grasses beneath the canopy. This is to provide good habitat for wildlife and protect the ground above the roots of the trees that could become compacted by heavy footfall. The background is softly blurred (bokeh effect), vibrant green of fresh spring grass. I got low to the ground for the perspective, placing the viewer at eye level with the fox and enhancing the sense of immersion in the natural habitat. Being on a level with wildlife like foxes will make you seem far less threatening and encourages them to behave naturally. There was a soft, diffuse light from high cloud and partial shade from newly unfurling leaves, which evenly illuminated both my subject and her surroundings, giving the scene a sense of calm, that I hope my exposure and processing help convey to the viewer.

A female red fox (vixen) is the central focus of this portrait orientation photograph. It’s a close-up image shot with a 100-400mm telephoto zoom lens, filling the frame with the fox and her immediate surroundings. She’s looking directly at the viewer with an alert gaze, her pink tongue is visible as she licks her nose. She’s just been drinking from one of her many watering holes around her territory, although this hole is part way up a mature tree in a hollow left from a lost bough! She has the characteristic reddish-orange fur on her back, legs, and ears, with grey, black, and white markings on her face, chest, and legs. A small white patch in the centre of her chest is just about visible. From the front this marking is a diamond star shape, identifying this individual as one year old Star. The background and foreground are dominated by the rough textured bark of the tree. Sprigs of fresh green leaves and small branches are scattered throughout the frame, adding a touch of vibrant Spring colour against the earthy tones of the tree bark and fox fur. You might also notice that Star is lactating! She’s now a mother and has cleverly hidden her very young kits well away from all prying eyes.

The central focus of this landscape originated photograph is a female red fox. She has the characteristic russet-red fur on her back and sides, a white chest and throat, black tips on pointed ears, and dark grey-black lower legs and feet. She’s in a low, alert stance, as descends a large, textured deadwood log. Her body is slightly arched, her gaze is fixed downwards and to the right, as she focuses on where to place her feet on the rough bark below. The deadwood is from an old cork oak tree that was likely felled for safety or because of disease. It has been used ornamentally in these more arid flowerbeds, with ground cover planting around the base and palms in the background. The background itself is softly blurred with natural green and brown foliage. The vixen is relatively young and a more recent arrival to the territory. With her more golden-orange colouring compared to other vixens in neighbouring territories, she has become known as Maya. Although habituated to the presence of people, she is more nervous than other foxes in the garden. We have observed her becoming nervous disposition leading to signs of stress if she becomes aware of people gathering to watch her and hemming her in while trying to capture images with phones. All my photographs of the foxes are taken with telephoto zoom lenses, or mid range prime lenses on occasions when foxes approach, without being baited, to within five metres from where I have seated myself, usually on the ground to appear unthreatening. It’s more important now than ever that we give the vixens plenty of space as we enter the breeding season. They will understandably be more wary of people and we don’t want to cause any distress or disturbances to vixens in search of food while they nurse and raise their young.

The image is a close-up photograph of an Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europaea) perched, upright, on a holly tree branch. It’s a plump bird, about the size of a great tit, roughly 14 cm in length, with a large head, short tail, blue-grey upperparts, a black eye-stripe, a chestnut-orange belly, and a short tail. The bold eye-stripe stretches from the base of its strong, pointed bill, through the eye, and down the side of its neck, giving it an alert, masked appearance. This is accentuated by the dappled light filtering into the shadowed depths of the dense holly tree. Shadows from branches cut through the highlights across the nuthatches face and upright stems of holly. It’s in an unusual pose for the species, sat upright, more like a robin would, showing off the warm coloured belly and flanks, that contrast against the blue-black shadows surrounding the bird.
