#WIPWednesday anyone? Here's a bit of the original romance I've been working on this year.

There’s a crisp anticipation in the air at the foot of the trail, an earthy-fragrant unraveling that hints at the approach of spring. The bracing chill feels good on Tess’ face and she breathes in the mellow scent of dormant plants shrugging off hibernation. She’s so glad to be outside, away from home.

Above them, the mesa rises like a sun-dappled promise, sandstone steps winding toward an endless cornflower sky. It’s the kind of majesty that makes her wonder why people bother living anywhere else, a perfect kernel of heaven at their doorstep.

Sagebrush is an easier trail than the Brandywine Loop, challenging enough for a good workout, not so difficult that she’ll have to plan a day of recovery around it. It’s a mile up the town’s northernmost mesa to an overlook of the rolling scrubland beyond Juniper’s border. On the interior side of the flattop peak is a solid view of The Grove Resort and the loosely-clustered development of luxury homes around it. The neighborhood is more manicured and sedate than Tess would ever feel comfortable living in, but it paints a pretty picture from a distance.

They launch into the hike at a steady pace, Beatriz in front, intermittently looking back to check on Tess’ progress. She keeps her promise to take it easy, reigning in her pace whenever conversation becomes strained from Tess’ trailing distance or labored breath. They’re not alone on the trail, but manage a healthy separation from other groups coming and going. Beatriz asks her about the reading, and Tess manages a diplomatic answer that doesn’t touch on any after hours excursions. She divorces herself from the chaotic tumble of emotions surrounding the entire night as she recounts a bland description of the event.

“So you liked this author? I know sometimes you get a dud.”

“Yes, Juliet is lovely,” she says honestly. Lovely and fierce and deeply passionate. And probably in need of an apology of some sort. Grimly, she admits maybe they’re both due one.

Tess doesn’t know what she would say, how to even start to address the colossal mess of last night, but she hates where they left things. Before it had all collapsed, Tess was starting to think of Juliet as a friend, someone she’d like to keep knowing.

“She handled the questions really well. Her parents are these bigwig Hollywood people—a writer and producer, I think?” Juliet hadn’t exactly said the phrase ‘nepo baby’ during their discussion at the bar, but casual references to Oscar nominations and A-list aunties painted a pretty clear picture. “I get the impression she has some media experience from them.”

Not that the polish she’d shown during the reading had carried through her alcohol-soaked tirade at the end of their evening. Still, the loose tongue, the vein of entitlement that had permeated her jealousy, could maybe be explained by a uniquely pampered upbringing.

“Oh, fancy! Hollywood,” Beatriz intones. “I remember her photo from the shop. Young black woman, right? I can definitely see the LA influence with all those piercings.”

“Yeah, she’s unique. Extraordinary writer.” Unbidden, she blurts, “She’s gay.”

She has no idea why she says it, what alien tongue forces the words from her mouth. It’s an impulse she can’t resist, some essential piece of information that feels urgent to share.

“Oh yeah?” Beatriz says, unfazed. “I guess that makes sense. Her book is a lesbian romance, right?”

“Yeah. Historical.” Tess honestly doesn’t know where the book falls on the spectrum of lesbian, queer, or sapphic literature, but it feels like a detail that might be of distinct importance to learn. “She brought a cool crowd into the shop. Lots of interesting faces.”

Stop it. Jesus Christ she needs to stop talking.

Next she’ll be recounting stories about all the lesbians she met at the queer bar she went to in the midst of a sapphic sexual crisis.

“Nice. I’m glad it went well.” Beatriz scrambles up a sloping outcrop, nimble as a mountain goat. “Hey, have you finished this month’s book yet? I don’t know how to feel about the talking octopus—I can’t tell if I’m supposed to take it seriously or not.”

And just like that, they move on. The door Tess unthinkingly cracked open drifts silently closed, and she’s saved from further rumination. A part of her is grateful Beatriz has the emotional intuition of a tub of yogurt. The same part of her determined to ignore a creeping feeling of disappointment.

I've been quiet around here, largely because I'm working on an original novel and the flow has been flowing. Here's a little taste of my Untitled Sapphic novel for #WIPwednesday

Evening brought a warm front that blasted through the remaining patches of ice in Tess’ driveway. Her mood, too, had significantly thawed over the hours. As she’d settled in for the night, changing out of work clothes and fixing a simple meal for one, she’d meditated on recent successes. She was proud of herself for making it to yoga that morning, proud of maintaining a new, more active routine the past few weeks. She’d kept her pledge to stop drinking alone, and she could already feel the difference in her sleep schedule and energy throughout the day.

She’d made a connection with someone who seemed like a genuinely interesting, talented human being, and that conversation had continued to percolate inside her throughout the long hours of the afternoon. Leading to now—swimming in her softest, oversized sweatpants with a wildly unstylish headband pushing back her curls, and launching into a project she’s been putting off for months.

Her dining table is awash with chaos, but she’ll be putting it all to rights before long. Set out next to a stack of professionally printed photos is an array of picture frames in every size and color. Ornately-carved pieces, sleek understated modern ones, kitschy painted thrift finds, and elegant gilt ovals have been pulled from the collection gathering dust in Tess’ attic.

When they’d first built a home together, Tess had tried to imbue some of her quirky style into the decor of their space. She remembers barreling home one day, flush with the success of finding the perfect fire engine red armchair to bring a pop of color to the living room. Michael had pulled a face, and the armchair was back with the warehouse remains the next day. Every similar attempt to bring some levity or interest to their home was met with disapproval.

“What if I need to have students over someday? Host faculty? I don’t want our house looking like a thrift store.”

She’d seen his argument and acquiesced. Tess’ personal style was shelved in favor of sedate elegance. Classic design pulled from the pages of a magazine. Boring. Predictable.

When she opened her shop some years later, she poured all of her eclectic sensibilities into that space, carving out one place to represent everything about her that was unexpected, creative, and fun. But the bookstore wasn’t home, and for nearly twenty years, she’d been entombed in the inoffensive design equivalent of a beige hotel room.

On the night Michael left, Tess had admittedly had a bit of a crash out. She’d been crying at their dining room table, feeling the lie of her former life settle into the deep spaces between her bones, unable to set her gaze on the happy, plastic smiles in the family photos staring at her from every corner. Posed portraits in matching frames. Both the people and their glass enclosures clean and blandly elegant.

She’d gone through the house, room by room, tearing down every picture with Michael’s grotesque, counterfeit face in it, tossed them one by one into a box, and dragged them to the curb to be hauled away.

The walls had been sparsely populated since.

Juliet was right. Juniper Pulp was an awesome space, and Tess’ style was something to be admired. She deserved to be surrounded by art and furniture and decor that reflected her, not some shell of a marriage that no longer existed.

So she’s starting with picture frames.

I lost this guy four years ago this June. In addition to being an incredible dad, brilliant man, and loving partner, Thom was also a super nerd with a love of Lego. I've been thinking about this portrait project for a while and finally followed through on it. I love how it turned out.

#WIPWednsday #ofmd From my not-yet published sci-fi smuggler/stowaway slow burn. I wrote this bit at 5am instead of sleeping 🙃

By the time the guy returns, preceded by a ping and the swish of the hatch opening, Ed has gotten himself situated into a much more authoritative position, upright at the desk, looking not at all like some injured toddler snuggling his pet goat.

He’s maybe sweating more than usual, kinda flushed with pain and exertion. And his jumpsuit is definitely rumpled and covered in animal fur. And his hair is an unspeakable tangle in desperate need of a deep condition.

But whatever. He’s the captain. And this guy is a grubby little stowaway. So it’s fine. He expects to be received with the gravity of what he is: a fucking badass smuggler with like super-intense vibes.

He does not expect, however, the radiant figure who struts confidently through the door.

“Wow! That really did wonders!” says the walking sunbeam wearing the hell out of one of Ed’s own jumpsuits. “What a difference a hot shower and a little me time makes. I feel completely refreshed! What would you like me to do next?”

Me time?

“Me time? The fuck is that?”

“Oh, you know. Care for the body and mind. Time for self-reflection. A little pampering.”

“Pampering?” They’re on a bare-bones second-gen transport. Where the hell did he wrangle any kind of pampering?

“Yes! A bit moisturizer on parched skin. The lovely hair mask I found in the facilities. Really brought my locks back to life!”

He pats a golden-blond halo, curls so bouncy they look manufactured.

“There’s no hair mask in the guest quarters. What are you talking about?”

“Yes there is! A full array of lovely hair products. Antique razor set. A beautifully carved tortoiseshell comb.”

To a one, items Ed knows live in his private quarters and nowhere else.

“You used my fucking shower?”

“Wh-what?”

The guy stumbles over his words for the first time since his little spa day excursion in Ed’s quarters.

“You cleaned your goat-pen-soiled, sweaty-soup body. In my. Fucking. Shower?”

“No, certainly not. I just went to the end of the hall like you said,” he peeps. “I thought that’s where you wanted me.”

“THE OTHER END OF THE HALL!”
