ABSTRACT
‘Vertical drinking’ is a longstanding concept in alcohol licencing decision-making and the literature on night-time leisure. As the term implies, it concerns drinking alcohol standing up. The proposition is simple: establishments where people stand to drink are associated with less desirable clientele, more drunkenness and a greater likelihood of crime and disorder. Existing research has explored how the concept of ‘Vertical drinking’ – known historically as ‘perpendicular drinking’ – can form part of heavily classed distinctions between ‘civilised’ and ‘uncivilised’ drinking practices. By examining 40 licencing hearings in England under the Licencing Act 2003, this paper demonstrates how vertical drinking serves as a: (i) proxy for ‘uncivilised’ drinking establishments, (ii) a proxy for problematic (working class) drinking bodies, and (iii) how the legal tool of the licence targets problematic drinkers by shaping the establishment in which they drink. Assumptions about problematic drinking bodies – this ‘vertical drinker’ – inform the regulatory distinction between ‘civilised’ and ‘uncivilised’ establishments.

Ex-Conservative MP writes for the Eye

HI! In the light of Kemi Badenoch's announcement that she's going to undergo a purge of prospective conservative candidates who believe in Net n Zero, I would like to make the following statement:

Yes I do get rung up three times a day by solar panel manufacturers, but then again, doesn't everybody? I can only assume I foolishly filled in a questionnaire at the Chelsea Flower Show and my contact details got data-farmed by Palantir and sold to "Eco-Friendly Solutions Ltd"!

I also confess that I do indeed have a "bag for life" in the cupboard under the stairs, but can I stress that it's not my life! My ex-husband brought it home one day and asked if he could keep it and, like a fool, I relented! I have now taken the bag to a landfill, where hopefully it will hang around for the next thousand years!

I do accept that when our local Conservative chairman drove past my house he did notice that there are a number of bins out front, one of which was coloured green.

Can I just reiterate what I said in the phone call I had with him where the cleaner puts the rubbish is her business, and I have never knowingly folded cardboard, washed out jars or inspected packaging to see if it can be recycled at home or given to the Ocado man for recycling at large supermarkets!

And lastly, and strenuously, I did say "phew" on my Facebook page, with a sadface emoji and a blazing sun emoji. That "phew" did NOT imply that I believe in man-made global warming. It was a "phew" at the fact that my lawn was ruined and my sycamore had just died due to heat stress.

So that's it! The only man-made heat I'm wilting from is from the team at the Conservative Candidate Assessment Centre! Love you Guys

I recognise this as this piece of land is in my ward, ADW5 polling district. this area has been part of Addiscombe West Ward since 2018. For most of 20th Century this was an integral part of the Fairfield/Central Ward. See some old Croydon Maps.

The Whitehaven star was called into the XI by Thomas Tuchel for the bronze play-off game, which went England's way with a remarkable 6-4 win.

It meant Henderson became Cumbria's first World Cup player for 36 years, the last being Barrow's Gary Stevens who played in the 1990 tournament.

Trump could lose the power to impose Tariffs unilaterally within the next week. This may be Trump's last chance to use tariffs as a power play, as there is a strong chance the Supreme Court will give Congress some control their levels and implementation.
