Wall Street big names join Nvidia to build $500bn Al financing package

The largest financial groups are working with Nvidia to assemble a $500bn funding package for Al infrastructure devel-opment, in one of Wall Street's most ambitious lending efforts.

A consortium including Apollo Global, Blackstone, BlackRock, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR is entering a partnership with Nvidia to invest in developing Al data centres, six people briefed on the talks told the FT.
The deal was set to be announced imminently, they said. The chipmaker's shares fell about 2.5 per cent after the FT reported the arrangement.

The partnership underscores Nvidia's growing efforts to raise capital for itself

The $5.25tn company has positioned itself at the centre of the Al boom, providing chips, infrastructure and software to a wide array of partners developing the technology. Nvidia's graphics processing units, or GPUs, underpin most of the leading US Ai models.

The chipmaker often provides financial backing to help its Al partners raisedebt in capital markets, which helps. boost Nvidia's own revenue. However, the circular nature of such transactions has raised concerns about concentrated risks in the sector.

Separately, Nvidia is in talks to provide a guarantee for a 10GW data centre in Ohio leased to OpenAl, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The Wall Street deal shows how Nvidia is building relationships with the giants of the private capital industry, which are collectively preparing to invest trillions of dollars of their insur-ance, retail and institutional investor assets into Al infrastructure.

In recent years, private capital groups such as Apollo and Blackstone have structured Al infrastructure deals to help companies such as Anthropic finance their heavy spending on chips and data centres.

Al creates synthetic viruses as biology confronts its Wright brothers moment'

Scientists in the US have used artificial intelligence to create viruses unknown in nature, a milestone in synthetic biology that promises benefits for healthcare but also raises important biosafety and biosecurity concerns.
Stanford University researchers developed a generative Al programme called Evo 2 that writes new genomes - the genetic instructions for life encoded in
DNA.
They used it to design and make 16 synthetic phages, small viruses that infect bacteria. Phages are sometimes used instead of antibiotic drugs to kill bacteria causing disease.
When tested in their secure lab, the researchers found that these novel phages were more effective at killing the common microbe E. coli than a natural phage that served as a template for Evo 2 to work on. The results were published in Science.
"Our study is a proof of concept showing for the first time that generative design can generate entire functional genomes," said Brian Hie, the project leader: "We chose to work with phages because they are small viruses, well studied, and have broad applications in molecular biology and therapeutics." The approach could be extended to larger organisms such as bacteria and then to more complex forms of life, he

For safety, the initial Stanford study was based on a non-pathogenic strain of
E. coli and used a genomic language model that was not trained on viruses capable of infecting the more complex cells that make up animals and plants.

The canal authority has warned clients that the chances of a severe El Niño system had risen to 81% from 25%. For now the canal authority is taking the first steps toward cutting capacity to around 34 vessels a day, down from its normal 36.

But more severe restrictions could be in store, given the history of how El Niño impacts the Panama Canal. In 2023 and 2024, the last time there was an El Niño pattern, transports were sometimes cut in half to 18 a day. This El Niño could be even more extreme than the last one.

Donald Trump Jr's venture capital firm is building an investment empire around "patriotic capitalism", in the latest effort by an entity tied to the president's family to capitalise on his America-first agenda.
1789 Capital, which counts Trump Jrasa partner, told the FT that its assets under management had jumped from $200mn to $3.5bn over the past year after going on a dealmaking spree with many of the leading privately held Al companies. Paul Abrahimzadeh, a 1789 Capital partner, said the goal was to reach $10bn in the next few years.

He pitched the firm as a new Carlyle Group, the investment firm known for its contacts in Washington and once nicknamed "the ex-president's club" after previously counting George HW
Bush as an adviser.
"Understanding the political landscape is important when you're allocating capital," said Abrahimzadeh. "If you're sitting in [Silicon] Valley, it may not be a core competency but founders want and need to understand geopolitical and macro factors that impact their businesses."

The plans for Florida-based 1789 Cap-ital, which Abrahimzadeh described as building a "generational American financial platform", are the latest example of how entities with ties to Donald Trump's family are benefiting from the president's policies, particularly his vocal support for Al and defence companies.

Abrahimzadeh said the "enduring thesis" of 1789 Capital was to "only invest in America".
"We were the first fund to commit to driving American exceptionalism in the private market: "Patriotic Capitalism"," he said.

Over the past year, 1789 Capital has bought stakes in some of the most sought-after late-stage private compa-nies: software company Databricks, expense management start-up Ramp, HR platform Deel, data centre company Crusoe, chip designer Grog and frontier lab Reflection Al, according to Pitch…
