Sian Berry MP
@sianberry
Green MP for Brighton Pavilion since 2024. Challenging Labour to do better at all levels of Govt since 2014. She/her. Promoted by Chris Williams on behalf of the Green Party at POBox 78066 SE16 9GQ
Brighton has been truly parched, and meanwhile water infrastructure crumbles. In 37 years since privatisation, not one new major reservoir for England. In the 35 years before that, nearly 100 major reservoirs were created. The new PM must renationalise water as a matter of urgency.
Ministers have one last chance, and a huge responsibility, to make sure the discriminatory draft EHRC Code is withdrawn, and write laws that protect the rights of trans people. So many MPs and leaders like @rachelmillward.bsky.social have stood up as allies to oppose it. #transrightsarehumanrights
I am glad the work of the Timms review found that the current assessment system and points based criteria are dehumanising, harmful and counterproductive. It shows that the Government’s previous proposals were as misconceived as many MPs alongside Disabled People’s Groups were saying a year ago.
Questions I would have asked the Home Secretary about Labour’s cruel asylum Bill…had she let me.
The first of TWO speeches to two rooms packed with constituents come to lobby their MPs for more action on Palestinian rights yesterday in Parliament. Thanks to everyone who is keeping up the pressure on MPs and the Government for the simplest actions any normal country would take.
Palantir came to Parliament today… A clear sign that our voices are being heard and the lobbyists are worried. Keep Palantir out of our public services 👇 you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/st...
Growth mentioned ten times. Climate mentioned zero times. A reminder that the green economy is worth £100bn a year, benefits every part of the UK, and green jobs are paid 11% above the average wage. Burnham must stamp out creeping climate skepticism and deliver for people and for nature.
Over 25 million US women do not have access to safe and legal abortion. When Roe V Wade was overturned, Reform MP Danny Kruger (Conservative then) denied pregnant women bodily autonomy when it comes to abortion. This insidious movement is infecting politics and Reform MPs are on the payroll.
Four years ago Roe v Wade was overturned. Meanwhile, in London this week, Nigel Farage spoke at the 'Alliance for Responsible Citizenship' conference attended by well-funded anti-abortion campaigners. ARC is bankrolled by GB News owner Paul Marshall. Since 2024 GB News has paid Farage £700k.
Yet another woke outrage from Brighton! The buses and museums have only gone and commemorated a small boat crossing of the channel on their new (and very handy!) 3X bus route.
Election day in Goldsmid - working to help get the wonderful Nadia Barton Ahmad elected to Brighton and Hove council! You’ve got til 10pm to vote if you are lucky enough to live here. #VoteGreen
Ten years of Brexit. Our country is poorer, weaker, and more isolated, unequal and divided than ever. A roadmap to rejoining is what we urgently need.
Ever tried to FOI the Royals? Not easy. An outrageous carve-out in the Freedom of Information Act is letting this institution operate in secrecy, and shield itself from accountability. I am moving to have this archaic loophole closed, as a step to a more modern constitution.
The answer is we MUST hold the next general election under PR. Never again can a man with such little vision be handed so much power to squander. The people’s voice should always be the loudest voice in the rooms of Government.
I really enjoyed engaging with local residents on how to re-imagine Preston Village as a walkable, people-centred community at their recent drop-in event! I heard lots of great ideas about how the area can be transformed in a positive way.
My message to Brighton after last weekend's peaceful resistance to fascism. “If friend we greet thee hand and heart, if stranger, no longer be. If foe our love shall conquer thee”
The perfect way to end Saturday’s massive show of unity from Brighton against fascism. Such a joyful gathering at Pink Moon and great to speak alongside the fabulous Paris Paloma and join constituents for an evening of music and creativity. This is what community looks like. 📸Sophia Metliss
I was honoured to speak in the moving debate on the legacy of Jo Cox. Jo’s ‘more in common’ message and the need to strengthen communities is still so urgent. As MPs we cannot agree on everything. But we must always strive to seek common ground and do so with love and respect as Jo always did.
It has been nine years since the disaster at Grenfell. 72 lives avoidably lost. Grenfell taught us that we cannot rely on anyone to keep us safe. That is why in Brighton I have pushed the council to publish fire risk assessments online for every resident to see.
Huge well done to all the campaigners, especially Mary Colwell, who fought to bring the natural history GCSE into the world. Planet-saving stuff! I had to give it a shout-out on Question Time - with an impassioned defence of otters on bank notes 🦦💚
Great to be at the Trans+ History Week reception with some of our Green councillors and cross-party MPs standing up for trans rights. Over 130 MPs have signed the motion against the EHRC’s cruel code of practice. Govt must now set time for a debate and vote. www.scenemag.co.uk/cross-party-...
Once again, Brighton and Hove’s brave and inclusive city has massively outnumbered an attempted fascist march on our streets. Love will win. Pics: forward view, backward view, team view, street view. #gohomeracists #Brighton
We must never forget that 100 years ago the General Strike’s massive working class mobilisation shook the establishment to its core. The Battle of Lewes Road, where 4,000 Brightonians stood in solidarity against police action, well deserves the blue plaque I was honoured to unveil last month.
Some snippets from my speech in Parliament on Pride Month. If the current environment for LGBTQ+ people teaches us one thing, it is that progress if precious and rights for any of us can, if not defended fully, be rolled back. It is our job in this place to prevent this.
I have written to the Prime Minister and Bridget Phillipson, calling for the cruel and confusing EHRC Code of Practice to be rejected. Legislative action must be taken to create an equalities framework that protects trans people’s safety, dignity and humanity.
I hope everyone is able to make time for some fun this #PrideMonth! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ This is a time to celebrate and uplift the incredible LGBTQ+ community, and to continue the hard battles to respect trans rights and protect LGBTQ+ lives here and around the world. Sending love!
I have sponsored @nadiawhittomemp.bsky.social’s motion calling for the draft EHRC code of practice to be rejected by the House of Commons. We need an Equality Act that cannot be misinterpreted. That sets out a clear and legal framework and respects trans people in their daily lives.
Over 1.3 million council homes have been lost since Right to Buy, we desperately need to recover them, and fast! 🖨️ Print your own zine and use it to argue for Buy the Supply: www.sianberry.org.uk/buy-the-supp...
‘Build Build Build’ can stay, but it is not enough to recover the over 1.3 million council homes that have been lost since 1979. 🖨️Print your own zine and use it whenever you talk about housing: www.sianberry.org.uk/buy-the-supp...
I made a zine! With cats! This is my case for buying as well as building the supply of council housing. I am calling on the Govt to deliver a massive fund for councils to buy existing properties and transform them into real council homes. ✍️Sign my petition: you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/fu...
