Brighton has been truly parched, and meanwhile water infrastructure crumbles. In 37 years since privatisation, not one new major reservoir for England. In the 35 years before that, nearly 100 major reservoirs were created. The new PM must renationalise water as a matter of urgency.

Ministers have one last chance, and a huge responsibility, to make sure the discriminatory draft EHRC Code is withdrawn, and write laws that protect the rights of trans people. So many MPs and leaders like @rachelmillward.bsky.social have stood up as allies to oppose it. #transrightsarehumanrights

I am glad the work of the Timms review found that the current assessment system and points based criteria are dehumanising, harmful and counterproductive. It shows that the Government’s previous proposals were as misconceived as many MPs alongside Disabled People’s Groups were saying a year ago.

Growth mentioned ten times. Climate mentioned zero times. A reminder that the green economy is worth £100bn a year, benefits every part of the UK, and green jobs are paid 11% above the average wage. Burnham must stamp out creeping climate skepticism and deliver for people and for nature.

Over 25 million US women do not have access to safe and legal abortion. When Roe V Wade was overturned, Reform MP Danny Kruger (Conservative then) denied pregnant women bodily autonomy when it comes to abortion. This insidious movement is infecting politics and Reform MPs are on the payroll.

Four years ago Roe v Wade was overturned. Meanwhile, in London this week, Nigel Farage spoke at the 'Alliance for Responsible Citizenship' conference attended by well-funded anti-abortion campaigners. ARC is bankrolled by GB News owner Paul Marshall. Since 2024 GB News has paid Farage £700k.

Yet another woke outrage from Brighton! The buses and museums have only gone and commemorated a small boat crossing of the channel on their new (and very handy!) 3X bus route.

In 1649, King Charles I was executed, at the height of the Civil War. His son and heir to the throne Charles II had to flee to mainland Europe. On his way to the Continent, he spent one night in Brighton, 14th October 1651. This makes him the person with the briefest connection to Brighton of anyone commemorated on the buses.

He found a Brightonian who helped him get across the English Channel, the collier Captain Nicholas Tettersell. Under cover of darkness, he made his getaway to France on the coal ship Surprise, together with three friends. When the Captain learned who his passengers were, he increased the price for his help to £200.

In 1660 the monarchy was restored and Charles Il returned to Britain as King of England, Scotland and Ireland. He was so fond of the ship that had ferried him to safety that he bought the Surprise and renamed her Royal Escape.

The King also did not forget the man who had helped save his life nearly a decade earlier. He awarded Captain Tettersell a pension of £100 a year for 99 years. With the money received from the monarch, he bought what is now The Old Ship Hotel in King's Road.
A yachting race is staged each year off the coast of Brighton to commemorate these events.

Ten years of Brexit. Our country is poorer, weaker, and more isolated, unequal and divided than ever. A roadmap to rejoining is what we urgently need.

That this House believes that successive governments failed to tackle serious inequality in the years leading to the 2016 Brexit referendum; further believes that, a decade on, Brexit has failed to reduce inequality, has been profoundly damaging and that there's now a growing consensus in favour of a closer relationship with the EU; wholly rejects the fearmongering and misinformation from the leaders of the main campaign to leave the EU; also believes that the British public and UK businesses have witnessed a litany of Brexit-related broken promises, economic turbulence, decimated trade, and regulatory nightmares, with small businesses particularly impacted; notes that analysis of Bank of England company data suggests the UK economy has taken a 6% hit from the effects of Brexit; considers that the UK needs to cooperate as much as possible with its nearest neighbours to address the multiple challenges it faces including shifting geopolitical relationships, global conflict and the urgent climate and nature crises; and calls for the UK Government to set out a roadmap to rejoining the EU to provide certainty and stability for businesses and citizens and to provide current and future generations with greater opportunities to live, love and work in the EU.

Ever tried to FOI the Royals? Not easy. An outrageous carve-out in the Freedom of Information Act is letting this institution operate in secrecy, and shield itself from accountability. I am moving to have this archaic loophole closed, as a step to a more modern constitution.

We must never forget that 100 years ago the General Strike’s massive working class mobilisation shook the establishment to its core. The Battle of Lewes Road, where 4,000 Brightonians stood in solidarity against police action, well deserves the blue plaque I was honoured to unveil last month.

I have written to the Prime Minister and Bridget Phillipson, calling for the cruel and confusing EHRC Code of Practice to be rejected. Legislative action must be taken to create an equalities framework that protects trans people’s safety, dignity and humanity.

Reject the EHRC’s Code of Practice
I am writing as Interim Women and Equalities lead of the Parliamentary Green Party to raise
serious concerns over proposed guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission,
which is not fit for purpose and will harm trans people living in the UK.
The Code of Practice for services, public functions, and associations is the culmination of
years of well-funded campaigns to drive a minority group out of British public life. It sets out
a system of segregation where trans people are excluded from services and spaces that reflect
their gender, and in some cases also excluded from services and spaces that reflect their sex
assigned at birth. Where unisex facilities exist, trans people will be forced into them. Where
they do not exist, trans people will be left with nowhere to go.
Your own Equalities Impact Assessment1 on the code admits there will be a significant
impact on those with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment - from forcing trans
people to out themselves by using disabled toilets to putting trans women at greater risk of
sexual violence by making them use men’s services.
The Code of Practice is both cruel and confusing. Inconsistencies between the Code of
Practice and its Equalities Impact Assessment, the Gender Recognition Act and the European
Convention on Human Rights will leave organisations and service providers at risk of
litigation from all sides. Frontline staff in spaces like cafes, gyms, and offices will be forced
to police gender, whilst the costs of creating self-contained gender neutral facilities are
estimated by your advisors as reaching £600m, which the government is providing no
funding to cover.2 I am pleased to see associations, like the Women’s Institute and
Girlguiding, given a potential route to serving trans and cisgender women, but this does not
counteract the pain caused by the majority of the guidance.

Letter continued: By enacting this guidance, trans people will simply be scapegoated. Research by Translucent
found there was just one complaint to English Unitary Authorities in 2025 concerning trans
women’s use of single-sex spaces, such as toilets and changing rooms.3 By refusing to act,
your government is once again playing politics with trans people’s lives, rather than tackling
real problems, like the soaring cost of living, rising inequality and the ongoing climate
crisis.

Trans people of all ages and backgrounds exist in communities across the country - and
always have. They have every right to thrive just as their cisgender friends, family members,
and colleagues do. When Labour brought in the Gender Recognition Act in 2004 it promised
trans people they could live their lives with peace, privacy, and dignity. Now you are
breaking that promise.
I believe there is a real risk of trans people being essentially segregated from public spaces. I
urge you to withdraw the code and take legislative action to create an equalities framework
that protects trans people’s safety, dignity and humanity.
