Sue Decker - she/her. Potter who likes pretty glazing; Veteran; Retired reporter who still finds patents and innovation fascinating. Jersey girl living in beautiful DC. www.fourelementspotterydc.com
One of the many wonderful things about living in DC is the proximity to the natural world. This #barredowl was hanging out at the end of my street, as curious about me as I was about him. I kept my distance, of course, but never so happy my phone has a zoom lens! #dcwildlife #dcnature #owls
You can’t imagine how excited and honored I am to be part of a pottery market at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, particularly to support an exhibit by extraordinarily talented Pueblo Potters who have inspired and awed me for decades. #pottery #womenartists #pueblopotters #nmwa
One of my favorite glaze combos — 3x Mayco Amber Quartz all over then 2x Mayco Cenote on the inside and outer rim (it’s runny so only an inch down outside). I call is my Star Trek design because it looks like entering warp speed. #pottery #art #ceramics #funglazing
One of my favorite techniques is to paint the honey flux and then do alternating splotches or lines of different glazes on top of it. The HF will blend them together beautifully.
I'm honored to have my pottery sold at the Smithsonian Folklife Marketplace starting this week. And I'll be teaching four workshops: June 30, July 1 and July 2 (two that day) to make a pendant, trinket tray, or whatever you like with air dry clay! Tickets here: www.eventbrite.com/e/colorful-c...
Another black clay platter. This one has Spectrum’s Floating Curry. I used some white slip in the center so the glaze would pop more. #pottery #ceramics #art #blackclay
What to do with leftover colored clay? Agateware! These are made from the slip and trimmings from the black clay platters I made and some Standard 182 stoneware. I like to keep the outside unglazed because it just feels so nice in the hands. #pottery #ceramics #art #blackclay
Finding a glaze that works with black clay is hard. coyote’s new Burnt Ember looks better in person. I added a bit of Amaco Snow around the rim for an accent but it wasn’t really needed. #pottery #ceramics #art #blackclay
While glazing is one of my favorite parts of pottery, the challenge of coloring clay and then turn into something unique is special too. These Agateware pieces (and more) will be on sale Sunday Dec 14 at the Mt Pleasant Holiday Market, my last of the year. #pottery #art #agateware #ceramics
I’m not sure which makes me happier today — the bumper crop of sweet potatoes from my backyard “ DC farm” or the amazing blowout by the Dems, esp. in my home state of New Jersey! #vegetablegardens #gardening #urbanfarm #vegetables #urbanfarming
Huzzah! Finally got the right clay body for these melted class coasters. I was having a high loss ratio with most of the stonewares I tried but Laguna’s Soldate 60, designed for raku firings, worked perfectly. #pottery #ceramics #art #potterytips
I’m super excited that my work will be available starting Nov 21 at the DC Maker’s Guild’s booth at the Downtown Holiday Market! One line I’ll be selling are agateware soap dispensers. Each is unique but I’m proud of all of them. #pottery #ceramics #art #dcartists
I’mcalling this the green nipple. Glaze are both Spectrum — textured kiwi with dots of muddy waters. Fired to cone 10. I counted on it being runny but apparently I had a slight high spot in the middle of the bowl. Still, cone 6 glazes at cone 10 are lovely. #pottery #ceramics #potteryglazing
I’ll be at Art All Night Mt Pleasant Friday (Sept 12) and at the Capitol Hill Art Walk on Saturday and Sunday. I’ll have smaller, easy-to-carry items for AAN and bigger bowls for CHAW. Some overlaps, but special items for each. More reason to visit both! #pottery #artallnight #capitolhillartwalk
Nesting pasta bowls. The glazes are Opulence Antique Iron, with Spectrum’s Running Hot Chowder (since coat) on top and then dots of Spectrum Muddy Waters to create the lines. #pottery #art #potteryglazing
