Just helped one of my students move apartments. 0.9 miles, couple of quick trips. The route by car would have taken more time as we could use one of the pedestrian/bike bridges in Davis.

The cover picture shows a high-resolution image of a live murine pancreatic islet expressing the calcium indicator GCaMP6s in every islet cell. Alpha and beta cells are pseudocoloured in hot pink and grey blue, respectively. Select single cell calcium responses to a succession of stimuli, including glucose, amino acids, somatostatin, epinephrine and potassium chloride, are highlighted. The extent and mechanisms of somatostatin inhibition of beta and alpha cell calcium and cAMP signalling have not previously been compared directly in real time. In the September issue of Diabetologia, Hart et al report that during nutrient stimulation, somatostatin inhibits insulin secretion indirectly by restraining alpha cell calcium and cAMP downstream of somatostatin receptor 2; this prevents glucagon from stimulating beta cells.

Drop off for an elementary school in 'bike-capital-of-the-world' Davis. There is nothing safe about streets where drivers turn bike lanes into high-stakes obstacle courses for kids. Providing physically protected bike lanes = making streets safer (and reduces demand for parking).

Final day of a great family trip, woke up to wildfire smoke, probably from the winds turning and blowing smoke south from Oregon. Not as bad as what covered the upper Midwest and Atlantic sea board this week, but nasty and depressing.

The lede on the American Diabetes Association on Bluesky - with zero posts - reads 'WE FIGHT to end diabetes' On the site formerly known as twitter, the ADA takes a conspicuously blander tone.

Biked my second grader to her field trip at the @ucdavis.bsky.social raptor center. Couple of miles mostly on protected bike lanes and along Putah Creek. Saw red-tailed hawk, turkey vulture, some hare and a frog being chased down by a hungry bird. Her classmates were driven and saw none of this...

My 4th grader at a packed City Council last night asked for a safe bike/ped overpass over a busy road to connect a new development instead of needing to wait up to 2.5 minutes at a light as planned. He then asked everyone to wait with him for the duration of his comment to share how long that is.

Biked a #bikebus to the Davis Varsity Theater to watch a free movie today with 120 Davis elementary school kids from 3 different schools). Such a blast - thankful to mayor @bapuvaitla.bsky.social for biking with us to encouraging kids to bike more and to Bike Davis for sponsoring. So much fun!!!
