Just helped one of my students move apartments. 0.9 miles, couple of quick trips. The route by car would have taken more time as we could use one of the pedestrian/bike bridges in Davis.
Pleased to report we made the cover of the upcoming issue of Diabetologia for our most recent paper!! The effort was led by Ryan Hart (@ryanhart13.bsky.social). Description in the ALT text, full open acces link here: rdcu.be/fptyS
Bonkers BBC story extolling LNG virtues in Cameron Parish - whose council president boast of 'bright future'. CP is in the most vulnerable coastal zone from sea level rise caused by burning fossil fuels. Half its people already left. But hey, they got the tax revenue... www.bbc.com/news/article...
Drop off for an elementary school in 'bike-capital-of-the-world' Davis. There is nothing safe about streets where drivers turn bike lanes into high-stakes obstacle courses for kids. Providing physically protected bike lanes = making streets safer (and reduces demand for parking).
Final day of a great family trip, woke up to wildfire smoke, probably from the winds turning and blowing smoke south from Oregon. Not as bad as what covered the upper Midwest and Atlantic sea board this week, but nasty and depressing.
Went for a long hike on the most remote stretch of California coast, only to find this piece of plastic pollution washed up. Seems that Chevron tries to ruin absolutely everything...
New paper in @diabetologiajnl.bsky.social on paracrine control of insulin secretion, led by the talented newly minted Dr. Ryan Hart (@ryanhart13.bsky.social). 1/5 doi.org/10.1007/s001...
Very proud to graduate the next group of supremely talented young Doctors from my UC Davis lab!! Dr. Mohammad Pourhosseinzadeh, Dr. Michelle Chan, and Dr. Ryan Hart. They each have published creative and impactful stories - much of it coming out soon. Stay tuned!! @ucdavis.bsky.social
Also, the ADA claims 'WE FIGHT - to end diabetes' on the account it never uses, while it's twitter lede has no such fighting words. What is it @amdiabetesassn.bsky.social ? Will you advocate for science and against OMB-2026-0034 as the @apsphysiology.bsky.social and @endocrinesociety.bsky.social do?
The ADA CEO issues an apology on twitter (receiving 3 likes from 28k followers) for completely mishandling events at recent ADA meeting where @sekahn.bsky.social was ejected, it's bluesky account has 0 posts. Post the apology on bluesky @amdiabetesassn.bsky.social , that's where you audience is!!
Another June, another crop of fantastic @ucdavis.bsky.social students who got leave their hand prints on the wall to celebrate their graduation from the Huising Lab. Congratulations to Hana, Nick, Ryan, Jacob, Frankie and visiting graduate student Jon!!
ADA sent a survey to ask how they could do better... Not censoring scientists would be a start. ADA President Elect and Scientific Sessions Chair (who I know and respect tremendously) did the right thing and resigned today. More coming. CEO Henderson next? www.medpagetoday.com/special-repo...
Not just a critique, an editorial that was published in the ADA's own flagship journal Diabetes Care. The experts included several past ADA Presidents and Award winners. Page views before the ADA publicized the editorial <300, approaching 10k now. Link below, let's help the ADA get the word out.
Biked my second grader to her field trip at the @ucdavis.bsky.social raptor center. Couple of miles mostly on protected bike lanes and along Putah Creek. Saw red-tailed hawk, turkey vulture, some hare and a frog being chased down by a hungry bird. Her classmates were driven and saw none of this...
Ran a tour of our all-electric home yesterday when the power went out. No power, no problem, as our Impulse induction cooktop has a built-in battery with enough juice for several meals ;-) #ElectrifyEverthing @damico.bsky.social @volts.wtf
Huising Lab showed up at the 2026 @ucdavis.bsky.social Undergraduate Research Conference with 7 undergraduates presenting posters!! Congrats to all of them for excellent presentations, and to their graduate students for mentorship and support!!
Tonight at the Davis city council meeting multiple city staff just scrolling on their phones while the rest of us heard from several close friends of the student who was killed in a collision with a car - hit from behind by a driver while biking on campus last week. Such indifference.
Writing away surrounded by American robins and cedar waxwings all morning, feasting on berries. #backyard_birding
Made a bucket full of batter to bake Dutch 'Oliebollen', which we enjoyed in style with traditional Dutch weather. Happy New Year, best wishes for 2026!
First big family meal prepared on this battery powered induction stove...
Davis, CA, bike lane in front of Willett Elementary - one of the oldest bike lanes in the US. Par for course at Davis schools.
Outside of my favorite friendly neighborhood brewery last night in Davis. Only one of these vehicles that likely was driven home after the consumption of alcohol weighs in excess of 6,000 pounds and has poor visibility because the hood is so tall...
Thanksgiving groceries plus awesome shopping assistant. Happy Thanksgiving!
My 4th grader at a packed City Council last night asked for a safe bike/ped overpass over a busy road to connect a new development instead of needing to wait up to 2.5 minutes at a light as planned. He then asked everyone to wait with him for the duration of his comment to share how long that is.

Dropping off kid to a play date - it may rain so whipped out the rain cover for the first time this season.
Biked a #bikebus to the Davis Varsity Theater to watch a free movie today with 120 Davis elementary school kids from 3 different schools). Such a blast - thankful to mayor @bapuvaitla.bsky.social for biking with us to encouraging kids to bike more and to Bike Davis for sponsoring. So much fun!!!
Very proud to see the main thesis work of the intrepid Dr. Mohammad Pourhosseinzadeh come out in @pnas.org today! In this paper, Mohammad assesses how crosstalk between insulin-secreting beta and somatostatin-secreting delta cells in the islet actually happens, in near real-time. A quick thread 1/10
