Quiet around here as we grieve for the Boundary Waters. Next week we were supposed to launch for six romantic days paddling from where this photo was taken. Our route was through both of the fires. What’s that about “Man plans, God laughs” ?!

In other news, apparently this guy 🐍 lives just outside my front door. He has a lizard in his mouth in this one bad photo I have of him.
Bears Ears is on fire. The Manti-La-Sal National Forest is beautiful. 0% containment in this rugged land. This picture was taken last summer where the Babylon Fire is burning today.
Kitty was awesome and hilarious. She would carry around socks or other small fabric things and would talk in her mama cat voice to them. Then she would hide the “kittens” under our kid’s bed. Thus my kid only had mismatched socks growing up. #RIPKitty
It’s been a rough week at the Stones. Kitty, our youngest kid’s sweet little elderly cat, had a stroke and had to be put down. We are all heartbroken. Hug your kitties.

The New Mexico Shakespeare Festival starts tomorrow in Albuquerque with the timely Julius Caesar. These performances are free, welcoming kids, picnics and even dogs. nmshakes.org

Super proud of my longtime Kids Crew member Thaniel who is also my current intern (for 3 more months!). Thaniel was his school’s valedictorian and gave a heck of a great speech at graduation. He was just a young kid when we started working together. Public radio kids are brilliant!
It was San Ysidro Day in Chimayo New Mexico with a procession around the plaza and ceremony to invoke blessings for the acequias, farmers, plants, neighbors and prayers for rain.
How you know who not to vote for New Mexico … Jeff Tucker is the opinions editor at the ABQ Journal and he is ultra right wing. Like hatefully so, and his endorsement is validation to not vote for whomever he selects. Jeff claims to be independent but he is not. Vote @debhaalandnm.bsky.social!!
You wanna see a lotta pickles? Pickles are my husband’s specialty. He made 140+ quarts last summer. These are just a few. We eat a pickle a day!

This is the face of New Mexican misogyny. Moms of New Mexico need childcare to be able to support our families. Universal childcare is definitely a gendered issue. Men like Duke don’t choose between work and childcare - they dump the childcare on their baby mamas. Remember come November!
