I like to use a virtual whiteboard (Miro) to plan my writing. I typically have areas for plot outline, character notes, and inspo pics. Stickies are colour coded by character/pov. I love the flexibility that this provides - it's so easy to move things around as ideas evolve #PretendPanel

Sneaking in another cheeky #WIPWednesday because I'm feeling fucking kinda gauche From Lucky Strike Chapter 3, in which Ed teaches Stede how to throw a dart properly... Chapters 1 and 2 here btw archiveofourown.org/works/875338...

"Alright, then," Ed says, gesturing to the darts on the table. "Your turn."

Stede picks up a dart and gets into position, once more adopting that all-wrong stance. The dart is more likely to take Geraldo's eye out than it is to hit the board. Might be time to put Stede out of his misery.

"Mate, can I show you how to throw a dart properly?"

Stede glances over at him, and for a brief moment, Ed thinks Stede might be too proud to accept his help. But then, Stede's shoulders sag and he blows out a little puff of air that makes the curl on his forehead bounce. "Yes, please."

Ed steps right up behind Stede, virtually plastering himself to his back. From this distance, he can smell Stede's shampoo, all floral and delicate. But that's not all he can smell. A little thrill passes through him as he detects the familiar vanilla undertones of his own body wash on Stede. Fucking hell. He just barely manages to suppress the urge to bury his nose in the crook of Stede's shoulder and draw in great lungfuls of him.

"Can I touch you, Stede?" Ed asks, and he's surprised at how low his voice pitches.

Stede had expected his fingers to feel stiff and clumsy. It's been so many years since they last danced over a fretboard. And while his playing isn't perfect — there is the odd bum note, and the occasional moment when he hesitates as his memory fails to keep pace with his fingers — he is surprised at how readily it comes back. It feels so natural, so right, and it makes him wonder why the fuck he denied himself such a simple pleasure for so long.

He lets the raw emotions of the music sweep him away. Lets the entire world recede from his awareness — everything down to the hard floor beneath his ass, the ticking of the clock on the wall, and the wide, dark eyes of the striking man behind the counter — and for a few peaceful minutes, nothing exists beyond Stede and the guitar in his hands.

All songs, though, must eventually reach their conclusion, and this one is no exception. There's a moment of silence as the final notes fade away to nothing, but then Ed exhales, and Stede's eyelids flutter open.

"Stede, that was…"

He should probably stop and rest, but he can't bring himself to pull over. He recalls a fact Louis had told him once, when he was just a tiny thing with a brain that would soak up facts like a sponge only to fire them out again, rapid and indiscriminate. Lou had told him that sharks suffocate if they stay still. That in order for a shark to stay alive, it must keep swimming.

That's how Stede feels right now. It's swim or die.

So no. No rest. Instead, he leans across the centre console to fumble one-handed in the glove box for the pack of Lucky Strikes and the Zippo he knows he has stashed away in there somewhere. It's been a while since he's smoked, because Mary had always hated the smell of it. But, well, that doesn't matter anymore, does it?

Stede turns the full force of those wide, hazel eyes on Ed, gripping his tumbler so hard that his knuckles turn white. "Really? You would do that for me?"

"Course," Ed says, throwing in a little shrug just to really sell how totally caszh he's being about this whole thing.

Stede studies Ed's face for a painfully long moment. Ed tries his hardest not to squirm or give any outward sign of just how frantically his heart is hammering away in his chest.

"Okay," Stede breathes. His mouth quirks into a little half-smile. "You're a good friend, Ed."

"Yeah, well, what are friends for?" Ed says, as he dies a little inside.

Stede shakes his head, nose scrunching and mouth turning down at the corners. "I can't say I've ever really seen the appeal. Mary and I rather preferred to forgo it altogether."

Ed winces. Fucking hell.

He watches Stede for a long, lingering moment. Watches him slither further down to the armchair, like he's trying to slide right off and sink down through the boards into the hold below.

Don't do it, Teach. Don't you fucking do it.

"Maybe you haven't been kissing the right people."

Stede's wide-eyed gaze snaps to Ed. "I suppose that's possible. Theoretically."

Ed could swear that he sees Stede's gaze dart briefly down to his lips before falling back down to Stede's brandy glass.

Ed sits up, slowly, as if moving too fast might cause Stede to bolt from the room like some kind of skittish colt. He sets the book down on the coffee table, cover closed — he couldn't give a shit right now about losing his page.

"You could… you could try kissing me. Y'know, if you like?" Ed says.

He shoves his phone in his pocket and radios in to report his rest stop, and then he's hopping out of the cab. He doesn't bother changing out of his comfy driving pants, because, frankly, he doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks about him or his sartorial choices anymore. And anyway, the little dinosaurs plastered all over his legs are cute as fuck, actually.

It's as Ed is making his way across the lot that something starts to feel a bit off. The first thing he can really put his finger on is that the interior of the Revenge looks darker than it should, the usual ugly fluorescent glow of the strip lights in the ceiling noticeably absent. The second thing he notices is the sign taped to the front door: "Closed for a private function."

What the fuck? Who in their right mind would hold a private function at some shitty truck stop in the middle of nowhere?

His eyes are drawn to a post-it note beneath the larger sign, on which someone has scrawled "You can come in, Ed."

This is fucking weird. Ed's tummy does a little lurchy thing. He tests the door, half-expecting it to be locked, despite the mysterious post-it note, but it opens without resistance.

It seems a shame, but then, Ed supposes it would be pretty poor form to burn the place down. And besides, Ed's got a fancy new ring to show off — can't have a bit of accidental arson stealing his thunder.

It's been nice, taking it slow. Being patient. Can't catch a fish that doesn't want to be caught, after all.

But, fuck, Ed does want. He wants to be caught.

Stede has been a perfect gentleman. He hasn't pushed, hasn't made any further advances since that first day, but Ed sees the way Stede looks at him. He's clocked the flush that spreads right down to the bit of chest that peeks out the top of Stede's shirt whenever Ed moans around a bite of pie. He's caught the way Stede's gaze lingers on Ed's lips sometimes, before Stede catches himself and tears his eyes away.

There's no question that Stede's hook is still bobbing about in the water. All Ed has to do is bite and wait for Stede to reel him in.

Ed is powerless against Stede's enthusiasm. Any attempt at nonchalance is quickly abandoned, and Ed finds himself beaming right back at Stede until they're in some kind of beam-off, just recklessly blasting rays of sunshine at each other across the length of the diner, innocent bystanders be damned.

His feet start to carry him across the diner, eyes still fixed on Stede's grinning face. It's only when he bumps into a table that he figures he should probably watch where he's going.

He makes it across the room without further incident and slides into the booth with a "Hey."

"Ed! It's so good to see you," Stede gushes, with the energy of a golden retriever who's been waiting by the door for his owner to get home from work all day. Christ, if the man had a tail, it'd be wagging about all over the place, smacking against the table and sending the salt and pepper shakers flying.
