your eyes asked the question
the one we're scared of
eventually
the phone number was found

the vet was all kindness
no fuss, no hanging about
she knew the best she could do
is bring the end quickly around

then your mum carried you
in a nice clean white shroud
i barrowed a marker stone
to heavy too be dug out

now i sit here
not believing you're gone
waiting for those ears
to shake and flap around
