25 years ago today, the Roadless Rule was created to protect millions of acres of public lands against clear-cutting. A tremendous outpouring of support helped put the rule in place, and it remains highly popular today – but the Trump administration is trying to undo it.

The shutdown is over, but the damage remains. Here are four ways Republicans have harmed the environment since October 1, even as House Republicans gave themselves an extended seven-week vacation.

There are several bills in Congress right now that would invest in clean energy, protect the health and rights of our communities, and protect iconic wild spaces. As legislators return to the Hill this week, our team will be working tirelessly to help turn these bills into laws. 🌎

The All Aboard Act would build high-speed rail, expand existing passenger rail service, and electrify the corridors and railyards that pollute the most.

The Arctic Refuge Protection Act is bipartisan legislation that would permanently end oil and gas leasing, development, and drilling on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; designate the area as a national wilderness area; and protect the subsistence rights of Arctic Indigenous Peoples.

The Forced Arbitration, Investor, and Consumer Rights (FAIR) Act would re-establish the rights guaranteed under the 7th Amendment that allow people to seek justice through the court system and hold accountable those who do wrong by them.

The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore provisions of the Voting Rights Act that have been gutted by the U.S. Supreme Court, reinstating protections for voters of color who could be disenfranchised by state-level policies.

The Lowering Electric Bills Act would restore some of the clean energy tax credits originally passed in the Inflation Reduction Act that, prior to being repealed in Trump’s budget bill, were creating millions of clean energy jobs and lowering energy costs.

The Preventing HEAT Illness and Deaths Act would improve preparedness for and responses to extreme heat, as well as establish financial assistance programs to address effects of said heat.

The Roadless Area Conservation Act would codify the Roadless Rule, which protects 58 million acres of national forests from logging and other development. The Trump administration recently announced plans to roll back the Roadless Rule.

The Scientific Integrity Act would prohibit political interference in scientific work, protect federal scientists from retaliation and censorship, and guarantee public access to scientific funding.
