Yesterday we went to Circus World in Baraboo and they had a really interesting exhibit on Catholic chaplains to circuses! Also talked about religious sisters who lived and worked with the circus.

Throughout the 20th century, the Catholic Church had special commissions to address the care of itinerant populations. Fr. David Hennessey first received a part-time circus ministry position in 1972, but a few years later he was appointed to serve Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (RBBB) on a full-time basis. Fr. David spoke five languages and embraced all faiths, opening his trailer to anyone in need.

The national circus chaplain operates under the Secretariat of Cultural Diversity of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The organization also serves migrant and refugee populations, along with traveling workers associated with carnivals and car racing circuits. Fr. Francis Cancro currently fills the role, along with a small group of other individuals who provide a ministry of presence for dozens of circuses around the country.

The Little Sisters of Jesus formed in Algeria in 1939 to serve people whose nomadic lives made it difficult to have regular church contact. The Little Sisters first traveled with Switzerland's Circus Pilatus in the 1950s and later worked with a dozen other European shows. In 1978, srs. Priscilla and Jo moved to the U.S. and began working in concessions and wardrobe at Circus Vargas. They were with the show until 1985, living in a small trailer with a chapel in their van. Over the next 20 years the Little Sisters traveled with four additional circuses. They shared everyday life with circus employees, breaking down barriers and helping to demonstrate unity among different types of people

Sisters Dorothy Fabritze and Bernard Overkamp of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus joined Roberts Bros. Circus in 2000. They lived in a trailer with the bedroom reconfigured as an altar and received special permission from the Vatican to carry and serve Communion. The sisters held circus jobs because they felt it important to do the same type of work as the people they lived among. They also taught religious classes and offered counseling. The pair joined Ringling Bros. and Bamum & Bailey Circus (RBBB) in 2004. Although Sr. Dorothy and Sr. Mary Seibert continued to travel with circuses from 2012-2018, they no longer worked for the shows and instead focused on empowering circus people to be lay leaders in their community.

In stories of hope: I went to the EAA Air Museum yesterday and they had the plane used to teach whooping cranes how to migrate! They were hunted nearly to extinction so there weren’t adults to teach babies to migrate. They did it for 15 years until the population established. 🥹

"Operation Migration"
Isolation Rearing: Operation Migration's whooping crane recovery project is based on "isolation rearing." Costumes, designed to disguise the human form were used in conjunction with hand held puppets of adult crane heads, and recordings of crane calls were used so that the cranes would not become familiar with the human voice. A helmet with mesh fabric covering the face and neck and a dark plastic visor, along with sleeve cuffs or gloves covered the handler's hands when working with the cranes. Handlers made every effort to wear the same footwear. The crane chicks and juveniles were raised so that they do not recognize humans as friends. The locations of holding pens and training facilities were in areas remote from human intrusion.
Between 2001 and 2015, "Operation Migration" used aircraft like this one to lead captive-raised Whooping cranes (Grus americana) on their first migration, part of an international effort to save the species from extinction by establishing a new migratory flock of Whooping cranes in North America. The Cosmos aircraft displayed here served from 2004 until 2014 leading 147 newly-fledged Whooping cranes on their first migration from Wisconsin to Florida. In total it flew 12,655 migration miles plus an uncounted number of training flights to encourage the birds to follow and to build their flight endurance.
The project was designed to teach safe routes and appropriate wintering grounds to a species that normally learns that behavior from its parents. After fifteen years of leading cranes south, there are now over 100 of these endangered birds in the eastern flyway, the first in more than a century. The migration flights ended on a successful note after 2015.
The project now reintroduces captive-raised Whooping crane chicks directly into this new flock each fall. It is hoped
the chicks will associate with the adult birds and follow them south on migration.

Super cool raptor talk at the Schlitz Audobon Center. Sadly 3 out of 4 of the birds they showed were hit by cars. 🚗 (Not wind turbines!) Disabling injuries meant they couldn’t be released.

There are a few pedestrianized streets, with lots of vendors and street life. I saw construction of more bollards and street improvements.

There are a few bus/bike streets where I saw lots of bike taxis, like in this photo. Bike taxis were all electric and fit two passengers in addition to the driver. Similar to what I've seen in Austin.

I have never seen so many cargo bikes. Not the kind I see in the US, but welded together contraptions for carrying STUFF. People carried blocks of ice, huge containers of tamales, boxes of merchandise to sell, etc.
