What does it cost to be kind?

“Transgender isn’t a real thing. It’s just people wanting to feel special or something.”

I’m not saying that you are right. I firmly believe you are wrong. Today, I want to ask you, “So what?”

How does it hurt you to respect them, anyway? What is the harm? Why are you offended by their desire to be called by a specific name; by pronouns other than those you want to use? How does this offend you?

People playing sports want to feel special. People playing music want to feel special. People, generally, like to feel special at least some of the time. There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel respect and appreciation. Why would we admire someone who buys a flashy car or jewelry but not someone who wants to just be themselves?

What cost is there in being kind? What pain do you suffer for respecting who other people tell you they are? What do you feel has been taken away from you?

“The world isn’t fair, It’s mean and people don’t get what they want.”

But we’ve worked hard to make it more fair, more kind, and to help people. Human history has been about not accepting the world as good enough. We gave that up when we started farming instead of foraging and building our own shelters instead of living in caves. We may never overcome all the unfairness of the world, but we don’t have to perpetuate it, either.
